PATRICK SIMS (France/USA) The Ribs & Terror

'The Ribs and Terror is a tale of Pinocchio inside the whale. Pinocchio does not want to become a real boy, he likes it where he is and does not want to leave. This resistance causes much belly-ache for the whale. Instead of searching for his maker inside the whale, Pinocchio discovers a new father figure in the form of Captain Ahab, and encounters a host of other characters who engage with the puppet during his internal voyage. The concept of the “Jonah syndrome” permeates the story- that is, when an individual is less afraid to die than to live to his fullest potential. The stories of Moby Dick, Pinocchio, Jonah combine in the whale's alchemical guts in a kind of rub-a-dub-dub, three men in a tub. This video project was inspired by themes developed during the making of a live theatre production called Ambergris- which features many of the same characters and sets. This film project allowed me a chance to develop a hybrid theatrical and cinematic aesthetic that is inspired by the films of Georges Meliés and Jan Svankmayer. The musical composition in the film “Lullaby for a sinking submarine,” by longtime collaborator Ergo Phizmiz, is like a collection of maritime melodies and soundscapes from both above and below the surface of the water. These tunes become the glue which holds all of these disparate stories together.' Patrick Sims Patrick Sims was born and raised in America. He was founder and former creative director of Buchinger’s Boot Marionettes (LIMF 2009) before creating his current company Les Antliaclastes (LIMF 2011, 2017 & 2019) which uses a unique blend of different puppetry techniques and styles, masks, machines, and original organic soundtracks, with references to classical, popular, hermetic and contemporary visual and performing arts, music, cinema and literature. Patrick first became involved with puppets whilst studying film and animation at Middlebury College, USA. He has worked with Bread and Puppet Theatre, studied shadow puppetry in Java, and pursued a doctorate at Trinity College, Dublin with a thesis on the Pataphysics of the Puppet, Alfred Jarry and the inhuman performer.
